Sports Therapy

Injury Management

Whether your requirements are injury prevention or rehabilitation, I help and advise clients aiming to return to peak levels of functional, occupational and sports specific readiness, regardless of age and ability.  If injuries are work related, the fundamentals of treatment are the same.  I can also coordinate referrals to other specialist practitioners.

Exercise is intrinsic to the rehabilitation process, and plays a significant part in helping injured clients back to full fitness. Personal exercise programs and instruction will be offered clients according to their injury, age and levels of fitness.  For example, an athlete recovering from tennis elbow will need to strengthen the wrist extensor muscles to prevent the injury recurring. The extensor muscles are often weak compared to the wrist flexor muscles and so are susceptible to overload. Or, an athlete recovering from a hamstring strain would need to stretch and strengthen the injured hamstring to ensure that flexibility and strength are equal for both injured and non-injured sides.  Exercise can take place in the gym, or as part of a Nordic Walking programme, or a combination of both.

Rehabilitation treatment methods available Include: massage, joint-mobilizations, proprioceptive neuromuscular stretching (PNF), trigger-point/friction therapy.  Anti-inflammatory drugs, can have negative side effects, and don’t deal with the cause of pain.

Below is a list of some injuries that gain positive benefits from sports therapy:

Headaches

Back pain

Repetitive strain

Shin splints

Plantar fasciitis

Frozen shoulder

Trapped nerves

Knee/Wrist/Ankle pain

Tennis/golfers elbow

Sport Massage

Sport massage forms a large part of most treatment plans, but is also provided for physical conditioning, injury prevention both before and after competitions, or workouts.  Pre-event massage is, energizing and invigorating.  ‘Post-event massage’ is calming and relaxing, focusing on flushing the muscles of waste products, ease soreness, reduce swelling and inflammation.

Active individuals who received massage are usually less tense, during activity, and have improved focus and performance.  Sports massage will help you maintain and improve range of motion and muscle flexibility, and facilitate relaxation.

 Sport Massage With Essential Oils

As a qualified Aromatherapist I can include the use of essential oils with sport massage treatment, as an option.

Many essential oils sold on the “high street” are not true pharmaceutical grade oils.  Many essential oils are adulterated bi-products of the perfume industry.  These oils are used generally for their therapeutic effect or fragrance, and often the interesting complex chemical elements are missing.  One of the important components of true essential oils is ‘Terpenes’, which are related to vitamins A and D.

Essential oils are readily absorbed by the body via inhalation, or skin contact, and internally distributed throughout the body.  Certain groups of essential oils have anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antiviral, and antibacterial properties, while some can be analgesic or have a stimulating and tonic effect.

Essential oils are use in the treatment of injuries, and conditions such as arthritis, by reducing swelling, and inflammation.  The benefits of certain oils will also disinfect wounds and, are resistant to ‘super bugs’.

Weight Loss

Injured athletes tend to gain weight and Essential oils can promote weight loss by supporting proper liver, kidney, thyroid, and endocrine-system functions.  There are particular essential oils that have diuretic, digestive, appetite suppressant, and anti-depressant qualities.  Detoxifying Essential oils speed up the metabolism, prevent emotional eating and other body imbalances.
